Joey Porter Jr Traded to Cowboys Amid Contract Dispute with Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers have traded cornerback Joey Porter Jr. to the Dallas Cowboys following a prolonged contract disagreement, highlighted by the team’s philosophy on contract guarantees. According to sources, the Steelers’ reluctance to guarantee money in the second year of contracts was pivotal in the trade decision.

Pittsburgh made an offer to Porter that included a substantial average annual value of $28 million, which was a starting point for negotiations. However, the deal lacked full guarantees in the second year, sticking to a pattern seen across the Steelers’ recent contract strategies. This approach, also adopted by a few other NFL teams like Green Bay and Cincinnati, ultimately contributed to the impasse.

The situation was further complicated as other Steelers players, such as T.J. Watt and DK Metcalf, had received similar second-year guarantees. Porter, desiring security over a potentially large but less secure payout, chose to pursue his career with a team willing to meet his contract needs.

Faced with limited options, Pittsburgh ultimately received a future second-round draft pick from Dallas in the trade, marking the only significant offer they received for Porter. He is set to play his first game with the Cowboys without carrying any injury designation, showing immediate potential for contribution.
